Course Description
A two-full-day didactic & experiential workshop offering a specific view of ego-states, in the context of EMDR therapy through an IFS lens, regarding their ubiquitous appearance, defenses, & relational phenomena. A conceptual bridge is formed between the two models, yielding additional language to enrich therapist-client communication about the client’s internal process, and much more.
Understand the importance of Self-Presence and the co-presence or activation of a Target Part in relationship to the Self. Cultivate and maintain Functional Dual Attention in the Assessment & Desensitization Phases using measurement scales (beyond SUD & VOC) relating to Self-Energy, state-binding affect & protective intention.
Alignment with Memory Reconsolidation research ala Coherence Therapy for additional precision in targeting underlying implicit memories, to increase the accuracy of identifying and elaborating appropriate positive and negative cognitions in the Assessment Phase.
These methods will be demonstrated live with participant volunteers, and significant supervised practice time is planned for participants to learn by doing.
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify one advantageous aspect of the IFS concept of Self that is not explicitly included in EMDR’s Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) system.
Explain the relationship between Functional Dual Attention and Self-Presence.
Describe the concept of energy as it applies to Protective Parts and how this can be measured and processed within EMDR.
Describe the concept of energy as it applies to qualities of Self and how these can be measured and installed as a resource within EMDR.
Identify at least one way that IFS language can used in obtaining a NC, PC or VOC.
Compile an IFS-Informed Assessment Phase target.
Discuss shifting targets from exile to protector, using IFS-Informed scales in Desensitization Phase.
Recite at least 3 IFS Interweaves in Desensitization Phase.
Identify a third type of processing (beside resources and desensitization) with bilateral stimulation named after a stage of Coherence Therapy.
Discuss obtaining precise negative cognitions in the Assessment Phase using Coherence Therapy concepts.
Describe your relationship with your parts-as-therapist based on the IFS model.
Explain what is meant by ‘the biggest part in the room.’
Explain the difference between a conventional EMDR Assessment Phase and the modified Assessment Phase used in Discovery.

In this workshop, therapists will learn how to effectively navigate the challenges that arise in EMDR Therapy by using effective IFS interweaves integrated into the eight phases of EMDR.
The esssential EMDR concept of Dual Attention will receive an IFS upgrade, with an emphasis on the importance and necessity of Self-Energy in relationship to activation of the burdened target Part.
Bruce Hersey’s IFS-Informed EMDR model includes elements of memory reconsolidation research from Coherence Therapy for additional precision in targeting implicit memories and increasing accuracy of identifying and elaborating on positive and negative cognitions in the Assessment Phase. Frequently Asked Questions
-
BEYOND EMDR TRAINING, It is necessary that you have an experiential background in IFS Therapy. Our experience has shown that students with minimal IFS experience struggle to integrate the material, especially in practice exercises. If you haven't already begun to use IFS principles in your practice, you will not optimally benefit from our Step Two and Three trainings.
-
YES. We require that anyone being trained to integrate the two models are first fully trained in EMDR, and secondly have a fundamental experiential understanding of IFS.
-
NO. While this is preferred, we recognize that even getting into this training through the IFS-Institute can be a challenging process. The Syzygy STEP ONE-IFS Intro Training is designed to rapidly prepare students experientially for the complex integration practices in STEP TWO.
-
YES, you do. The IFS Online Circle, IFS Continuity Program, PESI IFS courses, or other recorded, non-interactive IFS workshops, although helpful in learning IFS concepts and demonstrating the process, do not include or emphasize live interactive supervised practice in the roles of therapist and client as part of the program. The live, interactive, experiential component is what prepares students to benefit from STEP TWO. Students without this experience experienced significant difficulties assimilating the information and skills in practices before we implemented this requirement. If you still have questions about pre-requisites email CEdirector@syzygyinstitute.com
